Servos

I recently had two minor crashes, both affecting a servo in each crash. With one servo, one of the gears had a tooth missing. I replaced the gear, then the after two more flights the servo burnt out. After the most recent crash, another servo just doesnt operate. I question the quality of the servo, or is it a common thing after a crash to have a faulty servo. The servos im using are the DS75H. I was wondering if anyone had a servo they would reccommend to upgrade to without making any major modifications to the chopper or servo body.

RE: Servos

I just had a servo go out. I just repaired mine with a new shaft and now it wobbles and i have the slightest idea where to fix it.

RE: Servos

I recently took my 400 to the LHS where they have a workshop and an expert. He helped me tune mine and test-flew it perfectly. During the test flight, the elevator servo simply quit. He was able to save it from crashing, but it was a near thing. I have ordered 3 Hi-tec 65 MG servos and will install when they arrive. The more I read, the more I think the stock servos are junk.

RE: Servos

Gino, your words are wise. The stock servos are junk. I replaced mine a while back. The best investment I made on this heli. I haven't had to replace a gear set since. I see that they finally got the picture post working. I uploaded 2 videos of me trying to fly today. Check them out:

If you have any pictures or videos of you flying, how about posting them. I'm not real good at flying but I think you are new to this as well. Maybe we can post videos of our progress. I need all the support I can find. I'm getting anxious about throwing the throttle-up switch but I'm afraid to do it.

RE: Servos

Crash, you are exactly right, I am pretty new to R/C, but I am determined to learn and advance. After watching your videos (pretty cool) I think you are a little farther along than I am. My main problem is the lack of time to devote, I seem to be always working, but I will get there. That throttle-up switch is still a long way down the road for me, I have to reach the point where I am spending more time flying the machine than wrenching on it.

Just a word about replacing the swash servos - the Hi-Tech 65MGs I used fit perfectly, had to trim the servo horns a little, but that's OK. Then I discovered the polarity was reversed on these servos. I almost screwed up with the radio by monkeying around with the REVERSE menu, but took it to the guru at the LHS and he showed me that you reversed these in the SWASH MIX menu. He test-flew it right in the store, and it was solid as a rock. He even took his thumb off the cyclic and just let it hover. I think I am ready to try it again. If the wind dies down later today, I might try to crash it some more. The LHS needs more of my parts money.

RE: Servos

Bliksim - I think you can just look at the stock servos wrong and they will strip. The bigger problem is if one fails electronically during flight. This would almost guarantee a catastrophic (but spectacular) crash.
You can get Hi-Tech 65MGs (metal gears) for about 35 bucks each. I think Hi-Tech 65HB (same servo, carbonite gears) might be just a little cheaper. You should replace all 3 swash servos at the same time, so you are looking at close to 100 smackers.
i am sure that JR and Futaba make servos that work as well, maybe even better, but I didn't research them. Be sure to check that they are pushing the swash the right way after they are installed, you may have to reverse the servos in the SWASH MIX menu.
Good Luck!

RE: Servos

I switched over to the Hi-Tec servos a while back and that greatly helped me improve my flying. I guess it is becuase i didn't have to replace the servos everytime i flew, so i was able to get more flying done. I also foundout trying to fly in the wind helped me. It forced me to practice getting back to a stable hover and not to panic as much. That in turn has led to less crashes. I hear ya about getting the time to fly. I have some bright house lights out front so i try to get some flying in when i get home from work. Let's face it, work interferes with our fun.
